Last October we were visiting the folks Texas way.
<span style="color: #1d2228; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">Naturally we headed for Old Quarter downtown Galveston for some R&R and to feed our souls. Good people, good music, good vibes.
<span style="color: #1d2228; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif;">One of the nights we were fortunate to catch Colin Gilmore and Nicolette Good. Their voices were well matched, they sounded great together, both know how to complement another artist's voice and sound.
His dad, Jimmie Dale, was an early influence, of course, as were Buddy Holly and Townes Van Zandt, but also bands including The Clash and The Pogues. While the genetics are undeniable when you hear him sing, it did not take long for Colin to establish his own identity and style as both a songwriter and performer, becoming well respected in his own right. The Huffington Post dubbed his album, The Wild and Hollow, “BEST AMERICANA/SINGER-SONGWRITER ALBUM OF 2013. Sylvie Simmons at Mojo described Colin as a “West Texas Nick Lowe… instant sing-along quality.”

Ten Years After

This summer it'll be ten years since I attended Centrum's Blues Fest for the first time. Over the years I participated in more workshops, and Blues intensives. And thanks to lessons available on DVD I continued studying with, among others, Mike Dowling, John Miller, and (since taking his workshop at last year's Blues Fest) Happy Traum. Since my work schedule is ever changing, having lessons available whenever I have some time to practice has proven to be invaluable.
Connections made at Centrum's Blues Fest continue to inspire me.
Last night I got to open for one of Centrum's maestros John "Greyhound" Maxwell and Acoustic Juke. Read below what Judith thought of this special event.

Seattle's Best Kept Secret: 4th Wednesday of the month some fabulous musicians play at Highway 99 Blues Club. Find an atmospheric venue down some steps in one of the old buildings opposite Ferris wheel and Aquarium. Easy parking, right there in front of the building, nice waitress, good seating for everyone.
Last night my company and I were blown away by slide guitarist John "Greyhound" Maxwell's fingerpicking', range of voices and repertoire. The virtuosity of fiddler Jon Parry blew my mind. Jon's solos guided me from Highway 99 to high(er) spheres. His playing made me think of the difference between violin and fiddle and the musicians who feast us on their reach. Wondered whether he had classical background, and a search shows, indeed he does. Guy Quintino on the mighty bass, his neck craning with the swing of sound, at times had me glued to his face, so filled with joy, love for music paramount.
Before getting acquainted with this swell, swinging trio we enjoyed Gary's set, focused on the Blues. During the band's intermission he feasted us on what seems to come so naturally to him, the tunes and songs by his Texas Country men. You can see and feel, that he knows the lay of the land, the places from where the poetry welled.

All right! We're back!

We missed reporting on the day of arrival, or even on Monday, so here we go, two days later.

Sunday afternoon everyone was getting settled in.
With everyone I mean musicians of all ages. We're not a just a bunch of old guys and gals digging the Blues.
As I was unpacking my bag, a bunch of youngsters poured out of a van, and made their way into the dormitory.

Holy smoke look at the great line-up of artist faculty members for the 2017 Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival! Good thing Mary Hilts Parry sent a program PDF ahead of time. Figuring out who you want to study with can be difficult, what with so many tempting workshops.
Often it's a toss up.

At dinner time I joined illustrious dames Maria Muldaur and Eleanore Ellis. The latter (among others) introduced me to Piedmont finger picking way back in 2008, my first time "at camp".
I told Maria I was looking forward to taking her workshop. Of course she thought that was a good idea. She said something along the lines, that no matter how well you play guitar, it's your voice that tells the story.

As usual on the first evening the orientation session at the Wheeler Theater gave all the faculty members a chance to introduce themselves, and to show us their chops and let us hear their sound. After that I'm sure many stayed up for jamming, but I returned to my room for a good night of sleep.

Come Monday morning I took a walk on the beach before breakfast. The first workshop I took was with Happy Traum. Check out his bio on Centrum's Blues Fest faculty page.

If your not at the Blues fest, and want to study with him check out his Homespun page. My work schedule being erratic, I found studying with inspirational guitar masters I met in real life at Blues Fest via their DVDs works out really well.
About David Jacobs-Strain
In 2001, I was in charge of booking the 5th annual Coors Roots of the Blues Festival in Denver. I wanted to give the opening slot to a young up-and-comer - someone with enough chops and soul to play on the same stage with the likes of John Jackson, Corey Harris, Del Rey and others. Mary Flower suggested a young, sixteen year old kid from Eugene Oregon. Well, David Jacobs-Strain most certainly had the chops to hang and an old soul to boot.

It is sixteen years hence and that prodigious, young bluesman has not only doubled in age but, arguably, has at least doubled in musical breadth.
David has evolved from a myopic student of the blues into one of the finest singer-songwriters of his generation and, yes, he still has the chops to hang with the best. To wit, his newest record, due to release later this year was tracked at Sound City and mixed by Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Lucinda Williams). David is joined by an A-list of musicians including Jim Keltner, Viktor Krauss, Greg Liesz, and Larry Goldings.
He is just one of these guys who is in his own class. A great singer and guitar player. ~Jorma Kaukonen
Known for both his virtuosity and spirit of emotional abandon, David's live show moves from humorous, subversive blues, to delicate balladry, and then swings back to swampy rock and roll. It’s a range that ties him to his own generation, as well as to guitar-slinger troubadours like Robert Johnson and Jackson Browne.

"I try to make art that you can dance to, but I love that darker place where, in my mind, Skip James, Nick Drake, and maybe Elliot Smith blur together."

David began playing on street corners and at farmers markets as a teenager and bought his first steel guitar with the quarters he saved up. Before he dropped out of Stanford to play full time, he had already appeared at festivals across the country, often billed as a blues prodigy, but he had to fight to avoid being a novelty act: I wanted to tell new stories, it just wasnt enough to relive the feelings in other peoples music.

David has appeared at festivals from British Columbia to Australia, including Merlefest, Telluride Blues Festival, Philadelphia Folk Festival, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Bumbershoot, and Blues to Bop in Switzerland. He’s taught at Jorma Kaukonen’s Fur Peace Ranch and, at fifteen years old, was on the faculty at Centrum’s Blues and Heritage workshop. On the road, he has shared the stage with Lucinda Williams, Boz Scaggs (more than 60 shows), Etta James, The Doobie Brothers, George Thorogood, Robert Earle Keen, Todd Snider, Taj Mahal, Janis Ian, Tommy Emmanuel, Bob Weir, T-Bone Burnett, and Del McCoy.
Whatever the label, one thing is certain: 3hattrio has tapped into the (musical) soul of the American desert, rendering it with a completely original, often mind bending musical approach.

If you ask most people what Western music is you are likely to hear the response, cowboys and Indians. 3hattrio has great respect for these genres but they also think there is more to the West and its music. Musicians like to identify with things larger than themselves.

Music is often identified with place, like the Delta and its blues or mountain music of Appalachia. It can even be a city's music like New Orleans, Austin or Bakersfield. In the case of the 3hattrio inspiration comes from the deserts of southern Utah, thus, American Desert Music.

The 3hattrio plays American Desert Music and they aim to create a new music which responds to the natural world of their sacred homeland near Zion National Park in Utah. Their songs are mostly original and even their old-time cowboy and pioneer songs have an unusual twist. The subject matter of the songs is often desert oriented, sometimes not. Mostly, they express the desert experientially from a daily-ness of watching light off distant mesas and hearing the way sound plays off sheer sandstone cliffs. Then they play music. They dont over-think it. Living in the same isolated place, surrounded by an inspiring landscape of red cliffs is what makes this group thrive.

The 3hattrio members live in a place that has a great and lasting indigenous imprint. They strive to acknowledge the cultural traditions of generations of people who have worked and lived on the deserts of the American southwest. They dont attempt to perform the music of the nomadic Native peoples who have lived here for centuries.

They are modern day settlers in a place where settlement is not all that old.
Folklorist and musician Hal Cannon says: "From our vantage we are not all that different from other pioneers who came from diverse places to make community. From our varied musical backgrounds something truly American can be made out of the necessity to find sociability in an isolated place and to come with the intention to create something new."

It's heartening to see how many teens and young adults are participating in the workshops and jam sessions. They're all over the Centrum campus, boys and girls with or without guitars, players and singer, engaged in conversations about music, and who knows what. Some of them I've seen before. A lot happens in six years, they've grown literally and in their craft, they're on to something good, and they know it.
As is the case every time I come to the Blues Fest I'm a little overwhelmed the first few days, but eventually I settle into a pace that's comfortable. Sometimes I skip a period, go for a walk on the beach, take a nap, or practice in my "cell"by myself. Every night there are jam sessions in the dorm, in the hallways, in people's rooms. There's a curfew now, no all nighters allowed, at least not in de dorms. what happens elsewhere I don't know. I'm sure the kids do. I did when I was their age.
My old bud Everett Moran was doing sound at the McCurdy Pavilion for Maria Muldaur and her Red Hot Bluesiana Band. Hanging out with Ev off stage left was just the right place for me, old stage hand that I am.

Tonight and tomorrow night it's Blues in the Bars in Port Townsend proper.
Centrum's Acoustic Blues Show Case on Saturday afternoon is going to be too, follow the link, and take a listen. All of that'll bring a lot of folks to town, glad I've got a place to stay already.
The first year I was here, that would've been 2008, I got nervous just looking at the schedule. Didn't want to miss a thing. You'll be running on empty pretty soon if you follow that track.
Be selective, focus on your priorities, and add some adventurous twists and riffs, and give yourself a break. There's no failing in keeping your sanity by going for a walk on the beach or hiking up the hill. Take in Public Art hiding between the trees, and read Sam Hamill's poetry chiseled for all to see. Look for wildlife, birds, coyotes and deer abound.

The above advice comes from Wesley Snipes via my wife. El Double Tee Double U ("Listen To The Woman," what Snipes' character tells Woody Harrelson's in White Men Can't Jump the movie that came out the summer after she and I got married).

Yesterday, I joined Maria Muldaur's workshop.

Maria teaches two blues vocal classes, “Women Be Wise and Also You Guys” developing a blues repertoire that fits your voice AND “Finding Your Inner Blues Voice”, singing the blues with authenticity. Her pianist Chris Burns will be on hand to support the class.

We were all encouraged to sing a few lines from a song, I'll get back with you which one she chose for the gals, and which one for us guys. I may not remember the titles, but I do remember my surprise when I turned into a crooner the second time around. My voice strong and loud and, well, a gal I know from a Centrum Blues Intensive said I sounded kind of like Frank Sinatra.

Frank, eh? I've heard that before. My wife said the same thing. She said I ought to sing more without the guitar, so I can focus on strengthening my voice, and do some Rat Pack songs, cause it seems to be in my genes, or at least what I grew up hearing. Go figure.

What did I tell you? El Double Tee, Double U. Sing! Or if you're a singer the same must be true for you, take a different kind of workshop, you may surprise yourself, find another voice than the one you thought you had.
Yes, I'm back. Not that I haven't been at Fort Worden since 2011, I've taken a few intensives that I didn't report on here, but I'm finally back for the Blues Fest and settled in my solitary cell at the dorm.
Solitary, yeah, right ;-)
After the break I asked Mark Puryear if I could join his class. He seemed surprised. "Of course, there no need to ask," he said. Google Mark, and you'll find he's played guitar behind quite a few well known artists, among whom Blues Fest's Phil Wiggins. For a listen, check out Songs of Peace and Forgiveness. Mark's class was focused on Bluesy Jazz, diminished and augmented patterns of finger pickin'. Great stuff.
Later in the afternoon we gathered in the Wheeler for an hour to listen to Corey Harris interview Taj Mahal, who gave a great performance in the evening.

Today another John Miller class, all the good stuff just keeps adding up. Later and prep for participants presentation. The line-up was so long people played until about 1 a.m. or so. Having learned from earlier years, I put my name on the list as soon as it was posted. As number 5 I had to wait only 30 minutes before it was my turn. Before me a Frenchman who had indeed come all the way from France for the Blues Fest performed with Jerron Paxton. So I had the audience on my hand saying my song "France" by Keb' Mo' seemed an appropriate follow-up. It went well. Laughter in all the right places and I really enjoyed myself.

Guy Davis said, "You really got away from behind that guitar."
That's what I'd told him and other participants in his class, that I needed to sing more and not hide behind the instrument (in the theater we call that projecting your voice at the back row).
John Miller said, "Great job," and Jeff Scott told me he wanted me to do some recording at the end of the year. Talk about feeling good after playing!
The DVDs John puts out our great, especially for freelancers like me whose working schedules are so unpredictable they never manage to take live classes from beginning to end, but there's nothing like a live session. Today I went to his class again, probably will continue taking them every morning.
Guy Davis had each of the participants in his class come to the front to play something. When he heard my last name he came up to me, and embraced me saying, "Oh, brother, brother".

After the African beat I got my uke and joined Lightnin' Wells. This must be the first time that ukelele is taught at the Blues Fest. Lightnin' promised it would be easy to pick up the cords, and he was right too.

This afternoon Cheick and the Blues Fest's artistic director Corey Harris led an inspired porch jam in African music. Everyone was still going strong when I left for dinner, got to eat in time. Period.
There's a lot of good stuff going on, all day long, and you have to accept you can't do everything, and need to sit back and just listen at times too. In May of this year Steve Collins asked me if I knew any acoustic songs by The Beatles. Of course I did, I've been a fan and playing their songs since I was a kid. All through the summer we got together for jam sessions. We came up with a list of 11 songs. Initially we were going to record them ourselves, but were fortunate to be able to work with Wrick Wolff at his Silver Asylum Studio this Fall. And here it is! It ain't the Blues, but there's a lot of finger pickin' involved and yards and yards of strumming.
text editor Judith van Praag
Gary Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044132524321948422noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6523260462573160949.post-21161257400573914242010-12-15T21:08:00.000-08:002010-12-15T21:08:40.282-08:00DVD Guitar Lessons Work

My work schedule as a stage technician is so unpredictable that it's practically impossible to take classes so I was really glad to find that some of my favorite musicians have teaching DVDs out.

I highly recommend Mike Dowling's Swing Series produced by Homespun.
Also John Miller's Mississippi John Hurt Vol. 1 + 2 and his Intro to Chord Theory, all produced by Steve Grossman's Guitar Workshop

My latest find is Learn the Classics of Bossa Nova Guitar taught by Aaron Gilmartin also available through Homespun.

DVDs are the way to go for folks like me who can't take a regular class because of their work.
text editor Judith van Praag
Gary Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044132524321948422noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6523260462573160949.post-83346119349495212762010-08-08T08:44:00.000-07:002010-08-20T10:57:22.403-07:00Blues Fest 2010 Musicians Play the Pubs in Port Townsend WA

On the last night of Blues Fest 2010, I rode the bus down the hill, downtown Port Townsend was where it was at, not out at Fort Worden, the beach or the lighthouse. Blues was in the clubs downtown Port Townsend and I strolled from one to the next with my guitar on my back. Found Steve James, Lightnin' Wells, Suzy Thompson, Terry Bean and Jeff Scott playing full houses.

Nobody seemed to be where I thought they were going to be according to the paper, and I wasn't the only one, even the musicians were running around finding there next venue. On my way to one or the other I ran into Terry Bean. Got a chance to thank him for his generosity, the ease with which he brings reluctant musicians to sit down and play.

Jeff Scott meanwhile had moved from the Undertown Coffeehouse and Wine Bar to The Boiler Room. I stood listening to him, with an eye on the bus stop, when I heard him say, "There's a student of mine here, who might want to play." So I did, doing my best to keep the rhythm while he let the audience hear his fancy fingerpickin'.

How in the world can those guys talk to each other when they're playing music the way they do?

According to the Blues Fest program booklet members of the Quartet would be teaching their own workshop, but that was a misunderstanding David Bromberg said. That was just as well, for instead they all came out to #204. After Bromberg gave a talk, they all played —and chatted!

Afterward I went up to ask them about their gig at TheTriple Door in Seattle where I sub now and then as light man. They liked the room and the food and really enjoyed having a whole day off between 3D and the workshop and show at the Blues Fest on the Peninsula.

The concert at the McCurdy Pavilion was good, but I enjoyed the workshop, being up close with the musicians and hearing personal stories the most.

Mark, who'd been in Jeffrey Scott's introductory Piedmont workshops all week invited him for breakfast this morning and asked me if I wanted to join them and Bev at Hudson Point Cafe (used to come there when it was the Otter Crossing). Great breakfast with good food and a lot of talking. Funny thing is that listening to Jeff made me start talkin' like a Texan again.
text editor Judith van Praag
Gary Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044132524321948422noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6523260462573160949.post-17460864934169303992010-08-04T18:19:00.000-07:002010-08-13T10:47:19.097-07:00Restore Personal Performance at Blues FestIt's easy to get overwhelmed by all the classes and jam sessions that are going on all the time. And I mean all the time. This time around I participate way more than two years ago. At the time I was new to Piedmont finger-picking, man my pinkie got a workout like never before.

For someone such as me who can't really commit to a regular class the DVDs put out by master musicians have been a tremendous help. And last fall I was able to take Centrum's Piedmont Blues Intensive with John Dee Holeman, Lightnin' Wells and Michael Roach here at Fort Worden. That was intensive and intense all right.

What amazed me my first time around, then at the Intensive and now again, is how generous the master musicians are. Take Terry Bean, he waved me down on the first day, to come play with him. After a while these highschool age kids kind of hang around listening and he waves them down, tells them to play as well. And after a while he gets them to play a song of their choice too. No egos here, just the love of music.

Now and then I need to let the fingers and my mind rest though. I call it reboot, just like the computer. Yesterday after the morning sessions, I took a break from the meals at the Commons to have lunch at our fave Thai restaurant downtown Port Townsend with my old buddy Everett Moran, He and I go way back, Texas way, that is. Since I skipped the afternoon jam, my fingers were rested and I was happy to play for two and a half hours with Lightnin' and Jeff Scott and some other folks in the evening.

Everett had told me his pal George Rezendes was at the Blues Fest too, so after this morning's session with Terry "Harmonica" Bean I took George's Ragtime class. I'm not that familiar with playing that music and had to really pay attention. Three-quarters through the class I noticed I couldn't take anything in anymore. I may not be jammin' till two in the morning like some others do, but I feel like I've been going non stop from the get go.

So instead of going over all the stuff I've been soaking up like a sponge, I decided to go to town. There's a bus that takes you from Fort Worden to Port Townsend proper. Want to exchange a fleece jacket I bought at Swain's yesterday, have coffee somewhere or an ice cream cone, sit back, hang out. Sometimes you've got to reboot to regain optimum performance.
That's what I need, a reboot to restore.

Tonight there's going to be a dance party on campus. Peter McCracken has been telling us it's going to be great. I didn't bring my dancing boots, so perhaps I'll have a chance to play some more instead of doing a two-step (what is it going to be Pete?).
There's bound to be some jammin' goin' on at Fort Worden.
text editor Judith van Praag
Gary Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044132524321948422noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6523260462573160949.post-48446926180127955652010-08-03T23:15:00.000-07:002010-08-03T23:15:37.753-07:00Jammin' with Lightnin'

text editor Judith van Praag
Gary Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044132524321948422noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6523260462573160949.post-80507938938889381942010-08-03T23:14:00.000-07:002010-08-07T23:33:58.280-07:00Jerron Paxton and Suzy Thompson Lead Jam at Fort WordenJerron Paxton and Suzy Thompson lead the jam session on Monday evening and to my great surprise I played another two hours and ten minutes!

The Seattle P.I. did a great interview with Jerron just before he came to Port Townsend two years ago, in 2008. I remember thinking, man, this kid (he was 19 at the time) must be channeling some real old blues artists a-ma-zing.
text editor Judith van Praag
Gary Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044132524321948422noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6523260462573160949.post-4828238012965205252010-08-02T17:49:00.000-07:002010-08-02T17:49:26.769-07:00Phil Wiggins and Nat Reese at Centrum's Blues Fest

This is how it works at the Blues Fest, you pick the classes you want to take and then when you come outside, you find great guys like Nat Reese and Phil Wiggins sittin' on the porch, playin' like they do, and if you've got some licks left in your tired paws you join and otherwise you hang out and listen. Listen and watch. Wow.

Michael Kline did a great article on Nat Reese in 1998, I wanted to say interview, but Reese is a storyteller and he only needs a hint of a question to get started.
text editor Judith van Praag
Gary Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044132524321948422noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6523260462573160949.post-74206953087212114362010-08-02T17:31:00.000-07:002010-08-07T14:02:24.844-07:00Jammin' on Porch of Lounge #204

Nice surprise last night when I ran into old neighbors Mark and Bev. She's been to the Fiddle Tunes at Centrum before, but they're both firsttimers at the Blues Fest.

Today I took two classes, one with Terry Bean and one with Lightnin' Wells.
After that I played outside on the porch of the Commons with Terry for two hours straight. At some point someone came to get Terry to play for some Art in the Schools administrators I think and he asked me to go with him. So there I was first day at camp, playing along as if it was planned.

Sun broke through as usual after lunch. Realized I forgot my shorts. So did Mark. Will have to pick some up.
text editor Judith van Praag
Gary Dhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01044132524321948422noreply@blogger.com0
